On World Intellectual Property Day, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)
and the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell (MIC) organized an expert talk featuring Dr.
P. V. Madhusudhan Rao, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Design at
IIT Delhi, and Shri Divyanshu Mishra, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs at the Patent
Office, Delhi. The event aimed to shed light on the critical role of Intellectual Property (IP) in
the innovation landscape. Dr. P. V. Madhusudhan Rao began by emphasizing the significance
of IP in fostering innovation and protecting the rights of creators and inventors. He explained
that IP rights provide a legal framework that incentivizes creativity and technological progress
by ensuring that inventors can benefit from their creation. Shri Divyanshu Mishra discussed
the benefits that IP offers to innovators and researchers. He noted that IP rights can lead to
financial rewards through licensing and commercialization, thereby encouraging further
research and development. Additionally, he highlighted that IP protection can enhance the
credibility and marketability of innovations.
The session provided a comprehensive introduction to various IP components, including
patents, copyrights, trademarks (TM), and geographical indications (GIS). Dr. Rao and Shri
Mishra explained the distinct purposes each type of IP serves in protecting different forms of
intellectual creations, from inventions to brand identities and regional products. Shri Mishra
delved into the administrative and procedural aspects of obtaining patents, outlining the steps
involved from drafting and submission to examination and grant. He stressed the importance
of thorough documentation and strategic management of the patent lifecycle.
Dr. Rao discussed how IP facilitates technology transfers, noting that well-managed IP
portfolios can attract investment and collaboration opportunities, enabling the transfer of
technology from research institutions to industry.
The talk included case studies that showcased the successful application of IP in various fields,
illustrating how robust IP strategies can lead to commercial success and societal impact.

The participants gained information on the importance and commercial significance of
IPR and the process of filing IPR
